Outstanding product. My old sonicare batteries wouldn't take a charge any more. This new one is just fantastic. Just enough bells, don't need a degree in programming to make it work.

I got this toothbrush as a Christmas gift and love it! It is my first sonic brush - but I will never go back to hand brushing again! My teeth were noticably whiter after only a week (I bleach with high priced bleaching kits as well - this is much easier with noticable improvement along the hard to bleach gum line) I am not sure about the maintanance cost of new heads or the life on the battery - but what ever the cost the whiter teeth made it worth it for me already! (my 7 year old has used it a time or two as well and I can see a difference in her teeth already.)

Dentist clean, everyday!

My dentist originally told me to steer clear of the rotating brushes to clean your teeth, not much more than taking sandpaper to your teeth. I have since switched dentists, and this gadget had come recommended by many friends, as well as my new dentist. It vibrates the head of the brush at a super high rate of speed. Gone are the days of moving the toothbrush back and forth over your teeth. Simply put on toothpaste, put in mouth, and turn on. Place the head on your teeth and work however you see fit. Every 30 seconds, the tone changes, and you change quadrants in your mouth. This is my one complaint, I'd like to see variable timed (longer) intervals. After two minutes, or 2:30 if you chose the whitening mode, the brush shuts off. Almost four months after having been to the dentist, my teeth still have that super slick clean feeling, I LOVE it!

More powerful than old E-series

I bought my first Sonicare toothbrush back in 2002, an original E-series, and I used it until it wouldn't recharge any more, which was about Christmas 2008. After using a manual toothbrush a few weeks, I decided I simply had to get another Sonicare.

I upgraded to the R710, and I couldn't be happier. The lithium batteries make it smaller, lighter, easier to handle, and just more... toothbrush-like. The E-series always was a handful. Plus, Sonicare has apparently improved their ultrasonic technology over the last 6 years... the R710 is significantly more powerful than my old one was. The only downside I've found is that, since the R710 has 2 cleaning modes (whereas my old model had only one), turning the unit off in mid-cycle requires pressing the button twice instead of just once. The first press switches modes, and the second press finally turns it off.

An upgrade from older model - worth it if an old one dies on you

I've owned two generations of Sonicares previous to this one - a first generation basic model way back, and an elite 5500 (?) that got the more natural slanted shaft and got rid of awkward plastic tab behind the brush of the 1st gen. Neither one died on me, both lasted years.

From the E-series to the R-series (710), the major upgrades seem to be:

-Cheaper, better, simpler and smaller replacement brushes. No longer complicated screw-on affairs, the brushes just get pushed on a vibrating bolt, for lack of a better term. There are a lot less places for disgusting gunk to build up and easier clean up. Take much less time to switch heads, if you have to share them (or if the kids have to). They are slightly cheaper to replace, natural as it seems a lot less complicated design.

-Charger base is smaller, same bolt on design as brush head.

-Setting for tooth whitening. Wilder pulsing basically.

-Sleeker, smaller, more comfortable body.

I only moved from the E-series because I orignally bought it as a 2-for-1 special with a family member who eventually moved out and it only came with one base charger. An extra (replacement) one would have cost nearly $45 with shipping + replacement brush head for at least $13, might as well buy a new set at that point.

If you have a Sonicare already, it's probably most economical to stay with yours till it dies as none of the features are revolutionary. Still, I probably like the brush head redesign and resulting cleanliness/lack-of-gunk the best.

flexcare performance at a lower price

The batteries on my old Sonicare Elite (E-series) died on me, so I decided to get a new one. The R710 has several incremental upgrades which are worth the difference in price.

First and foremost, like the FlexCare line, it uses the ProResults head. This alone is worth the price difference. They snap in easily, they cost less, and the handle traps much less gunk than before. Sold. I'm still waiting to see how long they last, my guess is about the same.

In addition to the regular cleaning cycle, the R710 has a second cycle designed to scrub away stains. It's selected by pushing the power button twice. In this mode, the 5th (last) interval of the normal cycle is pulsed in a way that's supposed to break up stains on your visible teeth. Note that after this interval, the brush stops. If you still want to brush your tongue or concentrate on hard-to-reach areas, you'll have to push the power button again.

The R710 now also comes with a Li-ion battery, meaning a noticeable decrease in weight as well an increase in battery life. The charger is about half the size of the Elite's, but it doesn't have anywhere to wrap the cord like the deluxe charger on the Flexcare. It comes with a little plate that holds two extra heads though. The charge indicator is a simple LED. If it's blinking, it's below 50%; if it's solid, then it's above. Maybe not as informative or fun to watch as the Elite or FlexCare, but it does the job.

In short, if you want a good basic Sonicare, this is the one to get. It has all the great redesigned features of the FlexCare but less of the (IMO gimmicky) extra routines and modes. If you have sensitive teeth, check out the R732. For an extra $20, it also comes with a few extra accessories like a case and deluxe charger.

Great Toothbrush

This toothbrush works great. I have been using for a month now and my teeth have never been cleaner. The only con I can see to this tooth brush is the brush life. It is already indicating that I will need a new toothbrush soon.

We have used Sonicare toothbrushes for years and this one seems as good, or better, than the others. We travel and its great that this model (R710) has a "world" charger and not just the 110 - 115V that our previous models have.

However, I feel I made two mistakes:
1) This model does not come with a carry case
2) I purchased at Target, could have saved $30 through Amazon. Yea, could return it, but...

Benefits outweigh the (minor) drawbacks

My husband & I have been using the HealthyWhite for a little over a week now and we both agree that it gives our teeth the best brushing we've ever had at home.

Our new dentist and the dental hygienist recommended Sonicare to us both as we both have some gum recession and sensitivity. Rather than just go right out and purchase the first Sonicare we saw on the shelf, we decided to look at the available options.

The other big player in the power toothbrush game is Oral B. There are several others as well, but reviews were difficult to find so the choice eventually came down to Sonicare or Oral B. Also considering that power toothbrushes run on the pricey side (for us anyway), I insisted on doing research.

My research included: Visiting both the Sonicare and Oral B websites and reading about all the different models; reading online reviews, including Amazon reviews, for each of the different models; and a lengthy discussion with our dental hygienist.

The companies' websites were useful for general information. For me, though, the Amazon and other online reviews, were much more helpful in pointing out problems/successes with both Sonicare and Oral B power toothbrushes.

I actually looked at reviews for each Sonicare and Oral B models. After reading the reviews for the lower priced (and apparently older? Sonicare models), like the Essence, I determined that I did NOT want to purchase any of those models. The primary reason: The design of these brushes apparently allows water/toothpaste to seep into part of the brush handle in such a way that mold forms.

With the HealthyWhite and the Flexcare, Sonicare solved this problem, but I was very skeptical about spending nearly $100 (or more!) for a toothbrush.

The Oral B apparently does not suffer from the design flaw of the lower priced Sonicare models and I was actually all set to go ahead with one of the lower priced Oral B models, until I spoke with the dental hygienist.

Following that conversation, I concluded that even if I purchased an Oral B for my own dental needs, we would still need to purchase a Sonicare for my husband, whose needs exceed mine a bit.

For us then it made sense to buy one brush handle and just purchase another brush head.

Although I had read about the difference between sonic dental technology (which Sonicare uses) and oscillating/rotating technology (that Oral B uses), it didn't really make sense to me until my conversation with the hygienist.

The way it was basically explained to me as follows (Sorry if this is a bit graphic):

Sonic technology mixes the toothpaste with your own saliva. The "sonic" part of the technology not only reaches the surface of the teeth but into spaces that no traditional brushing mechanism can reach, even getting in and around the gums.

The Oral B apparently uses the more "traditional" brushing technology and only cleans the area that the bristles of the brush themselves can reach.

This changed my mind, especially in light of my husband's dental needs. At that point, it made more sense to buy one of the newer Sonicare models.

When I first used the Sonicare I expected it to be very loud based on reviews I had read. In my opinion it is quieter than my hairdryer, the noise of which does not bother me. It did take both of us a few days to get used to the feeling of the brush on our teeth.

The Quadpacer technology is helpful, as is the timing mechanism that all Sonicare brushes have, but not really essential in my case: I prefer the longer "Clean and white" cycle and sometimes find that that is not long enough for me.

Some criticize the auto shutoff, but the easy solution to that is just to turn the brush back on. I can always turn it off if I don't want to go through another 2 minutes.

I was a little surprised that the charger is so light and that the brush handle does not fit securely onto the charger: It just rests on the charger and could easily be knocked off. The charger does have room to hold 2 other brushheads.

I have not had any problems with the brushhead popping off the handle when I am brushing my teeth. I do have to be careful about keeping my mouth closed when I am brushing as well as remembering to not start the brush until it's in my mouth.

Overall, though we are very happy with our Sonicare and we really hope it results in better dental appointments. If it does, then it is well worth it despite the higher price tag. My issue with the auto shutoff and the charger do not outweigh the benefits of this brush.

I would recommend this toothbrush, but before doing so I would first recommend talking to your dentist/hygienist and doing your own research. Everyone's dental needs are unique and this brush (or any Sonicare) may not be the right fit for all.

Also, for those of you who do buy a Sonicare, if you register the brush with Sonicare (either online or with the card that comes in the package),the company will send coupons for additional products. I have not yet registered our brush so I don't know how well this works or what kind of coupons Sonicare sends.

very good product but high priced

This is a great toothbrush. But it is a toothbrush..I'm just not sure it's worth a hundred dollars. I've had the little cheapie electric toothbrushes and I wouldn't say this is 20 times better. One thing for sure - your teeth really feel clean when you're done. The timer is great in making you take the time to do it right. Not sure about the extra 'whitening' phase. As far as I can tell, it's just extra time, not a different mode altogether. So if you're looking to save money, maybe the basic model would be your best option.

I've used this product for years and have never been disappointed with it's performance. As long as you change the brush every three months it gets your teeth as clean or cleaner than going to the dentist.

Great cleaning tool.5
After 7 years, my Sonicare Elite toothbrush broke. Having such good success with the Sonicare line, I decided to upgrade to the Pro model. I have been using it over a month now and am pleased with the cleaning results.

I don't find the toothbrush too loud. It is louder than a battery-operated model, but it also cleans much better too.

Philips Sonicare is Awesome5
Have no problem with this toothbrush. It works great and is super clean. When I take the toothbrush out of the cleaner/sanitizer, it always feel like I always have a brand new toothbrush. Best toothbrush ever made!

Awesome technology5
I've been using electric toothbrushes for years. My hygienist recommended the flexcare and my teeth feel soo clean all the time. Excellent purchase. Preserves the body, the breath, and the bank account. My girlfriend loves it, too! We want to live to be 100 and we're taking our teeth with us!

my teeth are sooooooooooo clean5
GET ONE! Enough said. Easily the BEST toothbrush on the market with the type of clean provided--massage for your gums, timer to let you know to keep on brushing, and gentle mode for those with sensitive teeth. The downside is that the bristles on the brush wear down much faster than a normal brush (or maybe I am just brushing correctly now). I'd say I get maybe a month to a month and a half out of a new brush head.

My teeth look whiter

This was my first Sonicare Toothbrush that I bought after reading some of some of the positive reviews here. I was replacing an old Braun that I had for over 10 years. This one seems to have more and faster movements of the brush and it does a better job of cleaning my teeth. You know that feeling after you come out of the dentist's office for a cleaning where your teeth have that polished, smooth feeling when you run your tongue over them? Well, even after the first time using this toothbrush my teeth felt that way. My old toothbrush never did that. After using it for a few weeks my teeth looked whiter to me. Now I never did a real test, like brushing one half with this toothbrush and one half with the old, but when I look at myself in the mirror, I can see a difference.

I like the timer thingy on this toothbrush. I thought it would be like a bell or a beep, but it's more like a little pause after each of four 30 second segments. So you do each area of your mouth for 30 seconds and then if you want to do the "whitening" segment, you push the bottom button and it'll time those segments. This part is a different type of vibration or movement that is supposed to do an even better job of polishing your teeth. I don't know if it's this part or just spending enough time on each section, but it works. My teeth feel cleaner and look whiter.

Another thing that I noticed with this toothbrush is that my gums don't bleed when brushing my teeth anymore. I've had that problem for probably the last 30 years, whether I used my old Braun electric toothbrush or whether I brushed my teeth by hand. After the first couple days with this toothbrush it just stopped. I'm not sure if it's because of the texture of the brush or if it's just contributes to the health of my gums, but it's a nice bonus.

The toothbrush is very easy to clean and the brushes snap on and off very easily. It's lightweight which makes it easy to use and it's reasonably quiet for a power toothbrush. I'm completely sold on this brand. When I need to replace it at some point, it will be with another Philips Sonicare product. Two thumbs up!

The Sonicare R710 is a large improvement over the older Sonicare Elite model. It is much quieter and does not collect debris under the inside of the brush head needing constant cleaning for sanitary reasons. You can actually feel the difference after using this newer model in comparison to the older Elite. I purchased this product for my wife as a birthday gift and she is elated. I will purchase another of this R710 unit when my old Elite dies. I found a large savings on Amazon as compared to discount store prices in town.

I received this tooth brush as a replacement. The Customer Service at Sonicare was very efficient and professional. I am very happy with R710 HealthyWhite Power Toothbrush as it cleans my teeth like my dental hygienist without the prohibitive cost. It even reaches and cleans the hard to reach area like my wisdom teeth all the way in the back. There is no going back to old toothbrush as I am so impressed with this toothbrush.

Helps keep the dentist away5
I never thought I would be the type of guy to spend over 100 bucks on a toothbrush, but I did. I have a terrible gag reflex which makes going to the dentist a royal pain in the you-know-what. After cracking a tooth that I had a root canal in 12 years ago, I bought this toothbrush.

The difference was amazing. My teeth got whiter and stayed whiter. I ended up having to have oral surgery to remove the busted root canal tooth, but while I was under all the drugs I wanted them to clean my teeth and fill all my cavities.

Well they didn't do that because my teeth were already clean and I didn't have any cavities. I had not been to the dentist prior to this in about 6 or 7 years. All they did was a minor cleaning and a flouride treatment and sent me on my way. Cool.

This toothbrush is a great part of what should be a 3 pronged attack to preserve your teeth. Brushing with this brush 2 to 3 times a day (after every time you eat is a good idea) in addition to regular flossing and using a good antiseptic mouthwash should keep your teeth in excellent shape. It will also keep you from suffering from gum disease as so many people do these days.

This toothbrush is a great investment in your dental health. Buying it is MUCH cheaper than having a dentist try to re-construct your mouth. Trust me. Having a single dental implant to replace that pulled tooth of mine is going to be a 5,000 dollar process.

If you have never used one before, they feel wierd. But after one week of consistent use, you will never go back. Ordinary toothbrushes feel like futility now. I would also reccomend using the smaller brush heads as they are easier to use than the larger.

The unit is a tad bulky, but from what I hear you can even put on one of the new elite heads which is a much trimmer affair.

I really love this brush and will only get a new one (a Sonicare Elite) when this one dies. You can't go wrong with this purchase...

Review from a Dental Hygienist5
I have been a dental hygienist for 27 years. In my professional opinion, the Sonicare toothbrush is the best product around for improving oral health. I can tell when I see my patients that they have been using the Sonicare, even before they tell me. When used properly, stain just doesn't build up, plaque is reduced to a minimum, and therefore, tartar doesn't build up as much either. It should be required for any person who has periodontal disease.

This product is safer than any other brush, including manual brushes, for cleaning teeth with recessed gums. It cleans thoroughly without increasing the recession or causing erosion of the roots.

I recommend all models, with the exception of the PS-1. This is a less expensive model because it does not have the 30-second timer. It still brushes well, but using the timer as directed really adds to the overall benefit of the product. I recommend using the ultra compact brush for the older models. None of the brushes for the Advance models are compatible with the new Elite model. Brushes should be changed every 4 months because the magnets under the brush head wear out. It's a little spendy, but not nearly as much as the dental work its use can prevent!

The original company, Sonicare, had a customer service department that couldn't be beat. The service seems to be a little less with Philips, but I'm hoping they improve. Call their customer service number if you have any problems with the brush.

No cracked plastic here - I love this brush!5
First, I want to share what I know about why the plastic base/handle of a Sonicare may crack. The plastic collar that secures the brush head of my Sonicare Advance cracked during the first week I used my new brush. When I called Sonicare to ask for a replacement, I also got an explanation: If you use toothpaste with baking soda, the plastic will indeed crack sooner or later. The woman I spoke with at Sonicare said she didn't know exactly why this happens, but that the company was aware of the problem, and was looking into the cause and a possible solution. Anyway, they promptly sent me a new collar, and told me not to use any toothpaste with baking soda if I wanted to avoid another cracked brush. I've followed that advice, and my entire brush base is still perfect after 4 years of daily use...

Which brings me to this: I love this toothbrush! My teeth are clean, my gums are healthy, and I can drink the tea I love without developing a stained smile.

I highly recommend this brush, provided you can live without baking soda toothpaste.

Buy this one NOT the new model5
This is the best toothbrush I've ever used. My wife has her own as well. It does a fantastic job of cleaning teeth and gums, as attested to by my dentist. He asked me what kind of toothbrush I had switched to when he saw me. One of the best features is the quadrapacer. It actually lets you know when each 30 sec period is over so you tend to brush for the recommended 2 min. The new sonic-care works just as well but for $20 more. Why pay more for a few cosmetic changes.

When i got the toothbrush, it was amazing.
My teeth have never felt so polished and clean. Actually my whole mouth has never felt so clean. I will never use any other product but sonicare. every 30 seconds it tells you when to switch areas of brushing, and automatically shuts off at 2 minutes for the recommended dentist "2 minute brushing".

Have not tried any competitor's products, but I've had this for more than a year - and not a single complaint. Battery Life of the Sonicare Advance Models5
I want to respond to the fellow who said his brush is an expensive throwaway. I bought mine in 3/2000 and it JUST died on me -- that's six years of longevity. I had left it unplugged for several days, not realizing that the battery could be dying or dead. Right now I'm frantically searching for the exact same brush, and I'm having trouble because all I know of the model number is, it's an Advance series PS1. Well, my point is that I think the brushes are excellent, I think it's a quality product and I'm sorry he had such a bad experience.

In the comments above or below that state the battery dies after a while, you must realize that all rechargeable batteries (NiCd, NiMH, Li-ion, etc) last for approximately 1000 charge/discharge cycles. If you brush your teeth only once per day, you should expect the batteries to die in about 3 to 4 years. If you brush twice a day, the batteries will die sooner. That is the physical nature of rechargeable batteries.

Best Sonicare configuration for two people!5
This is another one of the effective, durable line of power toothbrushes from Sonicare, which was the brand recommended by my dentist. The best reason to purchase this particular model is that it comes with two complete brushes and one charger for a reasonable price. Most couples don't need two separate chargers in the master bathroom, and this configuration allows you to save a little money over the purchase of two complete brush/charger sets. Neither one of us needs the charger on the same day (each brush gets charged approximately one time per week, which takes about 18 hours for the full charge).

As far as the performance of this product, it has been reliable for the past two years. The signal between "quadrants" of your mouth is just noticeable enough to tell you to move onto the next area. It really leaves your teeth and gums feeling clean and fresh.

Brush head replacements are a little pricey, but easy to find on sale. If you join the Sonicare website, they send you e-mail coupons periodically for $5.00 off of a package.

I highly recommend this configuration of the Sonicare!

Great high-speed toothbrush5
After many years of good service, our old sonicare toothbrush's batteries finally gave out. I found the best price for the E 5500 on [...]. and ordered it. It is just great! At first, it tickles a bit since it is new and has lots of power, but this works even better than our old one did when we bought it new several years ago. I am impressed by all of its features and the price is really good since it comes with two brush heads. If you get a sonicare, it is a better deal when you buy one with two or three brush heads. You will not be disappointed!

Great Toothbrush, lousy charge capacity4
The sonicare is great for toothbrushing, however I have noticed that it is strongest after a charge. After a few uses it become less powerful. So, you either need to charge daily, or accept a less vigorous scrub. Once it loses its post-charge zest, it won't diminish significantly until the battery is completed used, so perhaps this is the optimal speed. I don't know. Interestingly, I had a Sonicare 8 years ago and it suffered from the same problem. Also, this package only includes one charger, which is inconvenient.

I would probably rate this package as a 3.5 due to the single charger. I would rate the Sonicare as a 4 due to the variance in brush power.

Excellent toothbrush - a must need.5
I've been using the Sonicare toothbrushes since they came out. My father is a dentist and we got some samples to try out. I had tried the Oral-B rotary style brushes and I feel that the sonicare is superior and the brush heads seem to last longer. Plus, with rotary there is more friction which, if you overbrush, can wear down your enamel and possibly hurt your gums (many people do not know that you can overbrush).

I've taken the sonicare on travel many times for weeks on end and the battery life is impressive.

Some people find it difficult to pay close to $100 for a toothbrush and then having to buy replacement brush heads at $10 a piece every 6 months.

I don't think you can afford not to use a sonicare. Your dentist will definitely be able to tell a difference.

As always, there is no substitute for flossing. When they come out with one, someone will become a multi-millionaire.

Only without the scraping! My teeth feel so smooth and clean, just like they'd been cleaned by the dentist. I was an agressive brusher before, but this is amazing. My gums even feel so much stronger now. I've noticed my teeth look whiter now than they ever have as well. I've noticed this toothbrush on the Friday sale, several different weeks. If you're looking to buy, I highly recommend doing it on a Friday, check out the Friday sale.

I've used this product for ten years. My dentist praises my healthy gums.
This product takes some getting used to because it is so powerful. If you have gingivitis this will cure it. It may take some perseverance at first if you have sensitive swollen gums but if you persevere you'll find it'll toughen them up and make them healthy and pink again. I'll never use any other kind again. I've had three earlier versions that eventually developed problems that the company replaced in exchange for the broken ones so they could fine tune this device. They did a nice job with the improvements and it's even more solid than ever. The battery life is like a week long without recharging. I've taken it on week long vacations without the charger and it lasted the entire trip.

Great product, too high of price...4
I have owned four of these over the past 10 years. The batteries give out after three years then you have to buy a new one. The price is way too high but they are the only comparable product available. I suspect the patent will soon run out and competitors will come into the market - bringing the price down. Until then, buy em' they work great!

Wouldn't Go Back5
Several years back, my dentist and also my periodontal specialist both recommended I consider using an electric toothbrush to help clean my teeth. It also helps fight for my gums against periodontal disease. I wasn't so sure about investing $100 more, especially in a toothbrush. My wife finally bought me one and I have never looked back. My teeth look better. I have less plaque, less bleeding gums, less problems, less cavities. I don't think $10 every six months for new heads is too much to invest in keeping my natural teeth as long as I can.

I have been brushing with a sonicare for 18 months. My dentist recommended it to me, especially because I was getting braces. I can't believe how clean my teeth look and feel. I never have bleeding gums any more. My orthodontist and dentist have both commented on the suprub shape of my gums. I couldn't be more happy! Defenitely worth the money!!!

These replacement brushes do exactly what they're supposed to: they're good quailty, they last a good amount of time and they're effective.
Some people recommend the compact brushes for reaching all the way to the back of the mouth, but frankly I have no problem with this one. Hey - no - that doesn't mean I've got a big mouth - stop that!
Seriously though, brushing teeth doesn't get easier than this.

Great device but with planned obsolescence3
Similar to many people here, my dentist suggested that I start using a Sonicare. I bought the Advance model about four years ago and used it anywhere from 2-4 times a day. My dentist noticed the difference right away and recommended that I continue to use it.

I typically get about 12 days between charges, so I've gotten into the habit of charging it on the 10th and 20th of the month. About a year ago I went on a trip and it died two days into the trip. I later noted that my Sonicare had just turned three and had undergone less than 100 charge cycles. A good set of rechargeable batteries should last anywhere from 300-900 charge cycles, but the Sonicare is using a unique wireless charging system that may or may not have a detrimental impact on the batteries.

In an attempt to prevent another item from being sent to a landfill, I contacted Sonicare, told them that my batteries appeared to be dead and asked to have them replaced. I offered to pay for shipping and cost of the batteries, but they advised that they don't provide that service, but would be willing to sell me a new one at a discount. I thanked them but declined.

Since the warranty expired, I took a Dremel tool to the Sonicare and opened it up. To my delight, I noted that the batteries employed by the unit were two standard, albeit unbranded AA NiCad cells. I removed and replaced them with two 600mah Sanyo cells, closed the handle and sealed it shut with silicone. It's been over a year now and my Sonicare is working as well as it did the day I bought it. For the gear heads out there, the Sonicare consumes about 1.3 watt hours and lasts about 14 days between charges when used twice a day. This equates to about 56 minutes of total run time, which means that the original batteries installed in the Sonicare were ~600 mah. I considered replacing the batteries with 2000mah NiMH cells, but opted against this option as the cells would probably self-discharge before I depleted the cells from normal use.

I disagree with another reviewer and do not believe the Sonicare should use Li-Ion or Li-Poly cells. Li-Ion and Li-Poly cells require sophisticated charging and discharging circuitry. They also last fewer recharging cycles than NiCads. Conversely, NiCads take a lot of abuse and in an application of this size, they provide more than enough storage capacity. For the bean counters, NiCads are cheap to source. However, the cadmium in NiCads is highly toxic and not exactly the most environmentally friendly option for batteries. Compared to NiCads, Nickel Metals would be a better environmental choice but would provide little performance benefit.

I like the Sonicare, but I don't approve of the idea of buying things and having to replace them because it was designed last a finite period and not be user serviceable. I would have given this item 5 stars had it been designed to allow the user the option to easily replace the batteries when they died as well as a having some sort of reclamation process for the $12 replacement heads.

Updated to add: I just bought a new brush head over the weekend and they're up to $20 now for a single and $30 for a pair.(2 October, 2006)

Mine is still going strong after 6 years!5
For those complaining about short-lived units: the key to longevity with this (or any Ni-Cad battery device) is not to leave it on the charger constantly. Only use the charger after the battery is drained. Mine gets recharged maybe once every 2 weeks. Otherwise it sits in the drawer like an old-fashioned toothbrush. Another trick is to take teflon tape (used by plumbers) and seal tightly the hold-down cap of the brush head - this prevents water from rusting out the magnets under the brush head.

Not for the Chronically Uncoordinated4
Based on my dentist's recommendation, I switched to an electric toothbrush, and ran across this one. I wasn't disappointed. The Sonicare left my teeth looking very white after just one use, and my teeth just feel cleaner than ever.

As a tea drinker, I contend with the stains that tea leaves. After my dentist recommended against using the whitening toothpastes, due to their abrasiveness to gums, I thought I was going to be stuck with healthier gums but stained teeth. Sonicare without whitening toothpaste makes my teeth look better than they did when I was using a regular toothbrush with whitening toothpaste. (I feel like a ditsy, smiling spokesmodel here but I really was impressed.)

My only complaint has been getting used to brushing with an electric toothbrush--a problem I suspect I would have with ANY electric toothbrush. You have to get in the habit of putting the Sonicare in your mouth, and closing your lips around the brush BEFORE you turn it on. Otherwise, you wind up with toothpaste decorating your bathroom mirror, your clothes, and pretty much the entire area around your bathroom sink. This isn't something easy to remember when your half awake and brushing your teeth. My other only complaint (OK, I guess I have two) is that Sonicare turns off after about two minutes, the time it has determined it should take you to brush your teeth. Being a little slower with things, I would rather turn it off when I'M done, not when it thinks I should be done. Apparently this design feature is to avoid over brushing. Since you can turn the Sonicare right back on again, this isn't a problem.

I can't speak for how long the charge lasts as I have left it on the charging stand when not in use. Apparently, however, the Sonicare is designed to hold a charge for quite a few hours, to allow you to take it with you while traveling, for instance, without having to bring the entire charging stand along.

Pretty good product
The Sonicare 7800 is the third electric toothbrush I have ever owned, following the Cybersonic 1 & 2. To the point, the Sonicare 7800 does a admirable overall job of cleaning your teeth. And yes, it does make you feel as though you have just left the dentist's office. I like the extra long handle it has. It does a better job of allowing the brusher to clean the teeth all the way in the back of your mouth than any other brush I've owned.

It is aesthetically pleasing and ergonomical. It has a good battery charger that tells you not simply that the unit is charged, but to what degree. My biggest complaint with the Cybersonics I owned is that the batteries didn't hold their charge for long and the battery itself did not have a long life. I have not owned the 7800 long enough to assess the quality of the battery, but the manufacturer claims you can take the unit on a 2 week trip and not have to worry about charging it. It comes with a sturdy, hard carrying case.

There are a couple of things that bother me about this product. It's nothing major and it might not bother most other people at all, but here they are:

1. The 2 minute brushing timer cannot be disabled. The Sonicare 7800 will stay on for 2 minutes, then it shuts off. That's because the American Dental Association recommends you brush for 2 minutes twice a day. All well and good, but most of the time, I like to brush for more than 2 minutes, so I have to turn the unit back on after 2 minutes. Why not give an audio indicator at 2 minutes instead of shutting the whole unit down?

2. I find the brush given is too thin and soft. That was the first thought that hit me when I first brushed with the Sonicare 7800. A fuller brush that is a bit firmer, I feel, would go a long way to giving the brusher with an even greater feeling of dental cleanliness after each experience.

So those are my pet peeves. You will not be unhappy using this unit, however. I love to use it and that fact alone, makes me brush longer and more often than if using a regular toothbrush. It's not too expensive either. You can find it on ebay for less than they are asking at Amazon, so do some looking around and you can get yourself a nice deal.

Blows the original Sonicare and Oral B away!
Three years ago, I threw away my Oral B for a Sonicare, and I thought the Sonicare was far and away better than my Oral B. The one dislike, however, was the relatively large head design, which made it a little difficult to reach the rear teeth. About two weeks ago, I got a mailer from the people at Sonicare, announcing their "new and improved" Sonicare Elite model. The ad said the new head design was angled, and featured a new design that clinical tests showed improved cleaning by about 20 percent over the older model. So, I bought it; literally. And after the first use, there is little doubt that the new Sonicare Elite is everything it's said to be. The new angled head and brush design make reaching every tooth easy. And the powerful sonic brush strokes leave your teeth feeling like you've just had a cleaning at the dentists office. This is one amazing toothbrush! Honestly, I don't know why my dentist recommends Sonicare so highly, because the better oral health it provides obviously is cutting into his business. The price is a little high for the 7500 model. The lower model is really a better value, since it includes all the functional features of the 7500. This is just a truly amazing power toothbrush!

more efficient than other electric toothbrush
As a dentist, I have tried this toothbrush as well as other electric toothbrush, such as Oral-B. Unlike other rotary toothbrush, this one is unique because of its high frequency of brushing strokes(31,000/min). It is more efficient than other similiar products.

However, I believe that a regular toothbrush can clean as well as any electric toothbrush. It's like driving a car with automative transmission vs manual. Both can take you to the same destination. Electric toothbrush does make one's life easier if one spends the time to use it correctly. And an electric toothbrush's coolness provides some motivation.

Sonicare is a fine product, but it does come with a high price tag. If you are willing to spend the money, this is probably the best electric toothbrush out there. Take the time to brush your teeth, even if you are using a electric toothbrush.

Pro's and Con of the Elite
Excellent product.

Pro's: - Major reason to buy Elite rather than (Sonicare) Advance: brush head on Elite has many fewer nooks and crannies that can foster bacteria. After I switched to Elite, I noticed how many hard to clean areas there were on the Advance brush head -- yuck.
- Teeth feel very "clean" after use. More so than with a disposable.
- Charge lasts an extremely long time. I've taken it on 8 day vacations without the base.

Con's: This might be largely due to how I use (abuse) the product, but I find the brush heads only last me a maximum of 3 months, instead of the suggested 6 months. Spoke to a Philips rep and they indicated I am applying way too much pressure. Makes sense, I'll be more gentle, but still not sure I'll make 6 months.

Advisory note: If you use a peroxide/baking soda toothpaste, make extra sure to keep the handle clean. The chemical composition of the toothpaste can actually cause the plastic handle to crack over time! Philips is aware of this and has adjusted the makeup of the plastic. Nevertheless, I did experience this on the Elite (issue resolved satisfactorily).

Now a lazy person can have clean teeth
I've been using the Elite 7300 for about a week now. I really do enjoy it - my teeth feel like I've just been to the dentist. I have fillings on the front of my teeth, and food frequently gets caught on the rough surfaces. Not anymore! The only real drawback I've found is brushing my tongue - brushing it with the toothbrush on sprays toothpaste all over the bathroom, and brushing it with the toothbrush off (like an old fashioned manual toothbrush) is annoying because the toothbrush head is very small. LOVE the 2 minute timer, and I just can't say enough that I LOVE how my teeth feel.

I had a tough time deciding on the different Elite lines, because I didn't find any helpful info on the difference between the models. So I'm going to tell you.

The 7800 allows you to change the pre-programmed 2 minute brushing time to 2 1/2 minutes. It also comes with a "luxury brush holder" - a wall mount kit. Also has a dual speed control and different charger indicator.

The 7500 comes with the stuff above, except not the timer change option.

The 7300 does not come with any of that, and works just fine. No need to spend the extra cash - it's fine just the way it is.

Worth the upgrade?
As an owner of an "original" Sonicare (on my second actually) I am writing this review more from the perspective of whether the Elite is worth $[$$]+ as an "upgrade".

First, from an aesthetic and ergonomic point on view the Elite is a big step forward. The handle is lighter and has a tapered shape with a rubber grip. More importantly the brush head is smaller and is more of a diamond shape rather than the "original" rectangle. The brush head "neck" is also angled to provide easier access to the back teeth and "flexes" both horizontally and vertically.

That being said, the Elite just does not seem as "powerful" as the original. This is based not only on my subjective opinion of the "feel" while brushing but also on an objective "look" at the brush head while powered on. Whereas the original has bristles that travel through a 90 degree arc, the Elite bristles barely travel at all. Granted, this may be in part due to the smaller/shorter bristles. Sonicare claims that the Elite is actually better from a functional point of view and I cannot say otherwise, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt. (yes, i tested with the "beginner mode" turned off)

Also, after six weeks of usage, one of the magnets on the Elite brush head appears to have rusted significantly. This was never a problem with the "original" Sonicare brush heads. Whether this affects performance or not I cannot say. As the brush head enters its third, fourth or fifth month of service I can only assume that the changes for decreased performance would increase. Also, black "moldy" appearing deposits accumulate in the handle "well" which, also, never occured with the "original". My guess here is that water is allowed to accumulate inside the brush head and handle well because of the flexible rubber housing (between the brush head "nut" and "neck") allows for the 360 degree "flex" I mentioned earlier-this housing is not sealed. When I inquired, Sonicare denied(not having seen the unit) that what I was seeing was rust, and referred me to the cleaning instructions. Take that for what it is worth...

I have found one interesting thing... While the "original" brush head will not fit the Elite handle, the Elite brush head WILL fit the "original" handle. I detect no difference in the brushing experience using that combination.

My recommendations therefore are:

1) if you have never had a Sonicare then by all means buy the "Elite"... (but be wary of the rusting problem)

2) if you currently have an "original" that is on its last legs then buy an Elite (again be wary of the rust)

...

Best value. The logical choice.
This model has all the features of the Elite 9500 (2 brush heads, 2 cleaning modes, programmable quadpacer, and a guage to indicate about how much charge is remaining in the battery), but it's $12 cheaper from Amazon!

All the "programmable quadpacer" feature amounts to is the ability to leave it on for an extra (i.e., a fifth) 30-second interval, or the ability to turn the timer off so that it's just on/off. I regard most of the features as functional ornamentation ("bells and whistles"), but the Elite 9800 also happens to be a dependable, super-lightweight model that will run a good three weeks on a charge with only one person using it. I went on a three-week trip and didn't bother to pack my charger, and it had charge to spare when I got back. NOTE: I always allow the NiCd battery run all the way down (to exhaustion) before charging it, and that enhances both the charge and battery life. (NiCd's only have so many charge cycles.)

If this is your first electric, you might like the way it comes out of the box programmed to gradually ramp-up the power over the first fourteen brushings.

What's the difference between the 9800 and the 9500? The models appear identical. The only difference I found is that one comes in a box that says 9800, the other says 9500. :-)

My battery finally died after SIX YEARS...
The only difference I can see between my new 9500 and the 7500/7300 models (about $20 cheaper if you can still find one) is that it comes with two different brush sizes. Replacement brushes are available in drug stores, Wal Marts, Target, and some grocery stores. It has two power settings. By default, it beeps at 30-second intervals and shuts off after two minutes so you can "do" your teeth by quadrants. All the "programmable timer" feature amounts to is the option of running for an extra 30-second interval, or turning the timer off entirely so that it's just on/off. The "easy start" feature, enabled out of the box, gradually increases power over the first fourteen brushings.

(August, 2006: Note that there is now a 9800 model with the same features as this one currently selling on Amazon for LESS. That is the one to get.)

My turn-of-the-century Sonicare would run a *good* two weeks on a charge with just me using it, and this one does too (more like three!). The instructions (then and now) say to leave it in the charger when not in use, but I always unplugged it to run the battery all the way down before re-charging; I think that's why it lasted so long. These have a good old fashioned nickel-cadmium battery and they only have so many charge cycles. I suspect the manufacturer doesn't want that getting around because their revenue stream would atrophy if everyone went this long before buying a replacement.

One nice thing about these new-generation Sonicares: smaller brushes and dramatically less splatter. The brush of my Y2K model looked like a standard manual toothbrush and some splatter was inevitable with that thing; I would remove my shirt or drape a towel over my shoulders to avoid getting festooned with micro-flecks of toothpaste. But not with this one! Plus, it hardly weighs anything at all; it's like holding a spoon.

My dentist turned me on and still recommends this brand today. (I brush for the whole two minutes and he recommends not doing that more than once per day and with a gentle, ordinary toothpaste as opposed to a whitener.) Money well spent --I haven't had a cavity in all those years. Never thought much about my gums, but they are nice & pink & clean & tight, like in the ad photos. Sonicare gives you 60 days to send it back if you don't like it.

Tip for newbies: Stand in the shower so that you don't splatter toothpaste all over the bathroom! Have fun! :-)

It's a must buy
Comparing this with Oral-B, Sonicare is more powerful, giving you versitility to move around the mouth. As a man and as a regular guy who has been using the regular tooth bush since childhood, I couln't help moving any electronic tools up and down and left and right in the mouth. With Oral-B, you can't do that, you feel it's not right doing it. But Sonicare makes that easy. I love it.

I'm a regular tea drinker, my teeth look brigher after using it comparing 5 years using the Oral-B.

Better shape than oralb
As someone whose gums are prone to recession, the oralb power toothbrush was always too rough and the round heads too large to avoid my gums. Even using the "gentle" head caused me problems. However, my teeth stain easily to coffee, so I like that power toothbrushes minimize stain buildup between dental visits. I tried this after seeing it at a friend's house.

Verdict: the more normal "brush" shape is more what one is accustomed to with normal toothbrushes. It still seems a tad over energetic even on the gentle cycle, but I haven't noticed any worsening of recession. It also fights stains in between the teeth better than its oralb counterpart.

A very frugal product --spend $22.50 every year, save $10,000.
Spend $22.50 a year and save $10,000? How does that work? Well, a couple of my close relatives have spent well over $10,000 each having their teeth and gums repaired. If you've had periodontal work or had root canal, implants, crowns or bridges done, you know that figure is not an exaggeration, and you're lucky if your insurance covers even a little bit of it. Having seen my relatives go through that, I've decided that as I get older, I want to spend my money on vacations and real estate, and not on painful dental procedures.

That's why the Sonicare is the most frugal product I've bought. I too have had some costly dental work, and I'm determined to keep my fixed-up choppers in tip-top condition. This toothbrush is amazing. One thing very few people note about the Sonicare is that it not only cleans your teeth beautifully, it also keeps your gums in great shape, and that may be even more valuable. Here's the best testimonial to the Sonicare: I recently had braces for a few years. I mentioned to my orthodontist that I'd graduated from high school in 1983, and she said, "You're not that old." "Yes, I'm 40," I said. She actually checked my chart! "Well, your teeth and gums look like they belong to someone in their 20s!" she concluded.

Sonicare More Effective Than Oral B in NWU Study
My best friend has been raving about his Sonicare Elite for over a year now-- encouraging me to try it. I did a little research and saw that OralB had a similar product and wondered which had a better product-- Sonicare or Oral B. My friend finally convinced me that the Sonicare product is superior, and then I read a review on Amazon from a hygenist who said that she went to a continuing education seminar and learned that Oral B was found to be superior...

At that point, I decided to do some research. I found a Northwestern University study conducted over a 6 month period. Patients with the Sonicare did much better, but don't take my word for it. Read the study results for yourself on the National Institute of Health web site:

Replacement heads ARE expensive, but compared to dental visits and cavity repairs they're a drop in the proverbial bucket. The first few times you use an electric brush with these heads your mouth will likely feel as if it's all a-buzz. Don't panic and don't give up. Keep using the brush and it'll pass in few short days. Exceeds my expectations
The unit has various settings for massage, fast clean, extra clean, etc. The sanitizer is an extra that I wouldn't have thought of, but makes me feel better about the toothbrush.

While it was pricey, I am very impressed with the device.

Philips Sonicare Flexcare Professional with UV Sanitizer
If you've used the other Philips Sonicare toothbrush, you will be happy with this. It is lighter, less bulky and easier to assemble and clean than the old one. No twisting the brush part on and no magnets to deal with. The UV sanitizer is a plus as is the appearance of the storage base.

Best automatic toothbrush
This is our third Sonicare toothbrush and is the best we have tried (also tried Oral-B). This system provides excellent cleaning with greater comfort and more choices. Great for gums! The UV cleaner system is a wonderful addition.

I just bought this product, two days ago. I don't its track record yet, for quality & longevity, but it's got loads of power, to clean my teeth well. The best part of this 'brush has got to be: the way you install the brush head onto a metal pin (on handle)! Easy ON,, easy OFF. Oh my, what a toothbrush!
Keep in mind that this is the first Sonicare toothbrush I've used so no prior reference point here. But this is the best toothbrush I've ever used, and by a long shot! My dentist had been recommending Sonicare to me for the last couple of years, yet I resisted, mostly because my Braun Oral B 3-d toothbrush was still working fine. But when my daughter's Oral B brush's battery finally died I decided to get a Sonicare for her. This brush wasn't available online or in stores at the time, but I found it on Ebay. I decided on this model because for one thing it uses a lithium-ion rechargeable battery instead of the ni-cad batteries used in other Sonicare models. When it arrived I decided to try the brush myself and WOW, did it ever tickle! You get used to that sensation within a few brushings. The brush action is lightning fast, no comparison with the Oral B, and my mouth and teeth feel so much cleaner. It literally feels like a visit to the dentist twice a day (without the vacuum hanging out of the corner of my mouth). I can't emphasize enough that comparing this brush to the Oral B is like comparing a $100,000 sports car to a '72 Pinto, it's that good. I've written very few reviews in my life, but just had to let the public know about this terrific new product. Buy it!

Would give it 5 stars BUT...
I can't. In fact, I debated about whether to give it three. In the end, I like more about it than I don't, so the three stars.

1) the cleaning features are nice - especially the new "Go" setting for a quicker (i.e. after meal) brush. They work as well as I would expect - which is to say my teeth feel "dentist clean" afterwards.
2) I love the UV cleaning feature.
3) I really like the new smaller head that comes with this model - great for getting the back teeth.
4) The way the heads attach to the handle is much improved over the old model.
5) It comes with a much smaller travel charger - finally!

Sadly there is a HUGE design flaw that is tough to forgive. The button you use to change from one cleaning speed to another is exactly where you grasp the handle of the toothbrush, and unlike the power button, is very easy to depress. This means you are brushing along in "clean" when all of a sudden you are in "gum massage" mode. Not sure how this got past the design team as it is not at all a subtle flaw - and I should mention that both my husband and I have this issue, so it is not a hand size or problem unique to my grip.

So, as long as you are willing to completely relearn how you hold your toothbrush this is a great brush....otherwise, stick with the classic Sonicare.

AWESOME PRODUCT
WOW! WOW!! WOW!!!
Just used mine for the first time and you REALLY DO come away with that "just been to the dentist clean". REALLY!!
It does TICKLE at first, ALOT, but even by the end of my first use I was starting to get use to it.
Handle is nice size, compared to their other series, and I did not notice ANY vibration in it at all! Also, handle is lightweight which I really like and the whole thing is EASY to use!
Comes with two brush sizes and that is cool as I have a small mouth, contrary to what my friends say! Ha!
It looks MUCH SLIMMER and COMPACT and a lot less cumbersome than the previous models out there.
I understand this is their newest model and I bet it will really SELL!!
I have been considering one of these brushes for a long, long time and finally took the plunge.
I opted to go without the UV Sanitizer and that is fine with me and saved $$ in the process.
It IS expensive to start out with but I LOVE that SUPER CLEAN feeling I have now, just after brushing, even for the FIRST TIME.
In fact, I am ready to brush AGAIN, tonight! THIS IS SO COOL!!
I hope to have one AWESOME checkup at my next dental appointment.
Here's hoping for NO MORE major teeth cleaning being required.
I am in hopes that this brush, used per the instructions, and by still flossing, I will be done with that dreaded scrape, scrape, scrape of the hygenist taking off the plaque!

Excellent after 2 month of use
I have been using Philips Sonicare toothbrushes for a few years, from the battery operated ones to rechargables, this is the best toothbrush I have ever used, the model comes with a UV cleaner, it is nice to know that your brush heads are free of gems every time you put your brush into your month. The different modes for cleaning is really great for those with sensitive gums, like my spouse, the flexcare heads are better shaped, and can reach deeply. it has a very high quality feel and appearance, I believe the is the newest toothbrush just came out from Phillips Sonicare.
Now I am thinking I'll buy a couple more for Christmas gifts, it is pricey, but it worth every penny, when you compare it to your dental office cost.
I bought this two handle pack, because it will save you some money compare to buy it saperately.
I highly recommended this product after 2 month use it.

Sonicare Rocks!
Was debating this one or the Ral-B and definitely made a good decision with sonicare. First off - this one is great for a couple because it has 2 units. Second, the ultraviolet cleaning thing is a nice side dish.

Most important, the toothbrush works great! Just don't put too much toothpaste on it or it foams up out of your mouth.

Where's the ear plugs????
I'm not sure what the problem is, but there are three of us in our family, so I purchased this two-handle pack as well as a single pack separately. They are all flex care systems. The single brush has a different colored handle (more like a mint-green and white) while the two pack is the light blue and white. The single brush I purchased (the green flex care brush 6910) is just fine. Quiet works great & my son loves it!! The two-pack has something seriously wrong with it. The brushes are both SO LOUD that you dread brushing your teeth. I get up very early and feel like I'm waking the entire house when I brush my teeth. My sons brush (the single) makes no where near the kind of sounds mine does. Funny thing is, the second brush in this two-pack does the same thing!! Defect? Not sure... I've written a note to Philips Sonicare asking about any issues.... I'll post again when I get the scoop. Does a great job, but the noise is incredible!

**UPDATE** I was finally able to reach customer service for the SoniCare and they first suggested that I replace the brush head (which is brand new... 1 month). That didn't help, so they suggested I return it --- but, silly me, I don't have the box anymore, so I'm stuck with one NOISY toothbrush. Well, at least my teeth are clean!

Works great, but it is way over priced for the features
I want to stress that this brush works superbly. My 3 stars are for the value/bang for your buck aspect of this product.

I have used three other electric brushes besides this one. One was a very early model Sonicare, the other two were Braun Oral-B models. ALL of them worked great. The three other brushes I've used have all had excellent durability. And I never had a single cavity with any of them.

There are really just two major differences between these two brands. Brauns tend to have smaller heads and they have a kind of rotating pulsing motion. Sonicare models have more of a vibration motion and, in my experience, tend to tickle a bit more. Your mileage may vary. In my experience, Braun brush heads also tend to be a little cheaper.

All the electric toothbrush makers make claims about being the "best." However, as one major dental site commented, "There are currently no studies that we are aware of that compare objectively electric toothbrushes. The choice is really a personal one." If you look at multiple objective dental sources you'll find the same kind of advice - choose according to your own preference, not the PR spin of the companies making the brushes.

This specific model has 3 cleaning modes, 2 "routine" modes, 2 minute timer, a quad pacer (30 seconds per quarter of your mouth), and a few other lesser features. The thing is, all of these exist on many other brushes, many of them about $50 (or more) cheaper than this one. If you're looking for just a good electric brush then I can't recommend this model. For about $50 less you can get, for example, the Braun 8850 . . . or the Sonicare e5500, to name just two. They both have most of the exact same features as this model.

For the exact same money you can get the Oral-B Triumph 9900 with Smart Guide. That model tells you, graphically, when you're brushing too hard (which causes major permanent gum damage) and when you need to replace the brush head. Those are the kind of extras I'd be willing to pay for. All the extra modes and timers I find to be a bit useless.

Pros: This Sonicare model works and works well
Cons: It's over priced for the features. There are better choices on the market.

Works Great
I have been using the Sonicare Elite 7300 brush for a couple of years now, so it was no surprise to me that the FlexCare line is also a very good brush. All-in-all, using the new FlexCare is not all that much different than the Elite series, it feels about the same despite the advertised 80% less vibration. That being said the vibration does not bother me at all. The two biggest differences I noticed with the FlexCare are the significantly smaller handle size, which could be good if you have smaller hands and the somewhat larger brush head size, which I kind of like, because it seems to clean more areas faster. Of course the new ProResults brush head also means that I can't use the same brush heads that I have already bought for my older brush, but I like the new head design and also the way that it just presses on instead of screwing on like the older heads did.

As for all of the brushing modes and cleaning routines offered with this brush, I have not even bothered with them, I like brushing my normal 2 minutes (30 seconds each quadrant) which is what the standard clean mode does, so that is what I use. The charger station is also nice because it can hold two extra brush heads so that up to 3 people can share the same space easily. It also has a "travel charger" which is just the main charger without the extra brush head spaces and also a cloth-like travel case. The battery life also claims to be longer than any of the previous versions, so taking this on longer trips without even worrying about the charger is more of a possibility.

So, in conclusion, I never had any problems with my Elite series brush and I don't expect to have any with the new FlexCare either. It also seems to work just as well if not better and I have had wonderful dentist check-ups for the past several years with no cavities and very little plaque despite the fact that I only brush once a day, so I'm pretty happy with the Sonicare brushes and plan to use them for a long time to come. If you are switching from a regular manual brush up to this it does have a little bit of a weird feeling at first, but other than that first week or so of getting used to it, I really have nothing negative to say about this product.

What an electric toothbrush should be
This is my second attempt at having an electric toothbrush. The first attempt was with an Ultreo Ultrasound Toothbrush. That was a terrible experience that left me with headaches after using it and teeth that didn't feel clean. (it's nw in a box in my closet collecting dust).

On the other hand this Phillips Sonicare Flexcare toothbrush is a great experience. The brush head is nice and compact, but still covers the entre tooth surface being cleaned. It provides a nice pause to remind you to switch quadrants of your mouth. It has three different modes to use. One for normal cleaning, one for sensitive teeth/gums and one that massages the gums.

There are also two other settings. MaxCare which is slightly longer than the normal setting and incorporates both regular and massage into each quadrant and GoCare which is a quick hit brushing when you are in a rush.

This package comes with everything you would expect. The toothbrush with one cleaning head (I would have liked to see one additional one included). It comes with a deluxe charging stand (I really like that you can wind the cord up inside the stand to get rid of some of the cords in the bathroom). A nice travel case (I wish it would have been more sturdy - it's basically a pouch). Three additional color rings to help know who's brush head is who's. (with the absence of more brush heads this addition is a little confusing).

The actual experience of brushing is great. Where the Ultreo was akin to torture for me, this was more like a spa for the teeth and gums. The head is small to where there is no jamming it into the back of your mouth, it leaves my mouth feeling fresh and almost like I just got done at the dentist. I usually brush my teeth twice a day, however, I have found myself wondering if I should brush more, just so I can use this toothbrush (sound corny I know - but it's the tooth! ok bad pun, sorry).

Like I said this is my second run at an electric toothbrush ad I am glad I tried again. This is what an experience with an electric toothbrush should be. I really enjoy this product and will be suggesting it to many people.

Noisy but works extremely well
I have used sonicare products for years and have progressively moved up the product line. This new Flexcare model is as they say, lighter, sleeker, smaller, but they did not mention its also louder than any other model. I did a side by side comparison using my older elite 7300 and the new flexcare model is much louder and raspier than the older unit. I called Sonicare today and they confirmed that the flexcare model is louder, but has less vibrations in the hand. Big deal. I expected it to be much quieter.

My dislike with the previous Sonicare models was the large screw-on brush head that always got a gunky build up inside of it.

No more,the brush head is completely new and similar to the Oral-B type. The brush head now just snaps on. So say goodbye to the gunky,icky build up in the brush head and handle on the previous models

Bottom line, it's a fantastic product but a little noisier!

UPDATE 05/01/2009: the extra noise I first encountered has gone away. Maybe Sonic care redesigned the brush heads? or maybe the brush just broke in?

Update 06/23?2009, My unit failed the other day, just stopped working. Thankfully this unit has a two year warranty. Called Philips and they are sending out a brand new one free of charge. Yes!

Goodbye Oral-B, you were good, but not this good
I have been a very happy Oral-B (Braun) user for about the last 4 years. During that time I've gone through 2 of their higher-end brushes. I've never been one to bad-mouth Sonicare, because it's a good brush, but I just preferred the smaller size of the Oral-B, along with the pop-off brush heads. Now however, Sonicare has changed that with their new model, the Flexcare.

I purchased this model because it was recommended by a dentist who said that the new Flexcare is not just a new style of brush, but that it actually has a greatly improved brushing technology. So, I bought a brush online and proceeded to try it out. Wow.

After having used the Flexcare, it doesn't even seem possible to compare it to my old Oral-B (which is only a year old.) This brush actually seems 20 years more advanced, and that is not an exaggeration. It has a bit of a high-pitch to it which doesn't bother me, but the real story is in the vibration. The brush seems to work exponentially better with 80% less vibration; it's a dream to use. I actually get sad after it auto-shuts off after the brushing cycle, something that I wish it didn't do. Also, and perhaps most important, is that it feels like it cleans my teeth better than my Oral-B. After using the Flexcare for awhile, I went back to my old Oral-B, just to compare... As soon as I turned it on, I couldn't believe that I loved it so much, it felt like, and sounded like an antique in comparison.

The different brushing modes on the Flexcare are really nice, but there is a small problem with all your options. One thing I'd like to be able to do is to "program" the brush to do the 3-minute brushing mode every time by default (this mode does the brushing action and also the massage action.) However, whenever you place the brush back on the charger, it automatically resets back to the 2-minute brushing mode. Programming the brush for the mode that you like every time you pick it up is not hard, but it's really annoying. Sonicare: please fix this in later models.

This brush comes with 2 chargers, one for home (with the sanitizer) and a travel one (without a sanitizer.) It also comes with a brush head cover, and a travel pouch to put the wand in. These accessories will make traveling with my brush much more enjoyable. I've never understood why more electric toothbrush makers don't include or even make these accessories.

The pop-off brush heads (as compared to sonicare's old screw on heads) are fantastic and much better than the Oral-B pop-off ones. On my Oral-B I had to remove the brush head to wash out the gunk after brushing, but because the Sonicare brush heads are longer, very, very litle gunk gets in them. That was a pleasant surprise. Although, removing and attaching the brush head on the Flexcare wand requires a lot more force, which I don't like.

The U.V. sanitizer is a nice gadget, but who knows how useful it really is? In fact, there may even be some long-term immune system dangers by killing every bacteria/virus in sight, just like using anti-bacterial soap, but this is not the forum for that. I used the UV Sanitizer a few times, but I don't use it at all anymore because of what I believe to be a very real problem with all the anti-bacterial products out there these days. Although, based on the few times I did use it, I could see where its utilization on a daily basis would be cumbersome. If you brush twice a day, it becomes too much of a bother to remove the brush head every time and put it in the sanitizer. The brush head needs to be aligned perfectly in the sanitizer and the door closed and snapped gently. If you have big hands, putting the brush head into the sanitizer is more awkward, especially if you're using the large brush head (FYI: the brush heads come in 2 sizes, small and large, and one of each is included in the package.)

It's nice to see that Sonicare has FINALLY ditched the NiCad batteries and gone to NiMH batteries; what took so long? This change means that the brush will now run longer on a single charge, and won't develop a memory by leaving it on the charging stand. It's also the reason that the brush handle is now smaller which makes it more manageable.

As much as I love this brush, I do realize that the price Sonicare has marketed it at is exceedingly high. If I were to buy it again, I would save $20 and get the one without the U.V. sanitizer. Other than the high price and a little nitpicking on the brushing modes, I really couldn't be more pleased with this brush. Oral-B has a LONG way to go to catch up to this Sonicare model.

Update 29 November 07

The brush still continues to amaze me and I LOVE using it everyday. I've stopped using the charging station with the UV Sanitizer and I now only use the "travel charger" for everyday use at home. One nice benefit in changing to the very, very small travel charger was that I freed up some space on my bathroom counter, and the brush is easier to set down and pickup without the sanitizer being in the way. I can't understand one reviewer who said the brush doesn't sit right or balance well on the stand. Also, I have sensitive teeth and use a sensitive toothpaste, and the brushes' actions have not bothered me at all. I'd buy this brush again in a heartbeat.

First use:

It was a dark and stormy night.

Okay, it actually wasn't stormy, and it wasn't technically "night", seeing that it was two in the morning, but it WAS very, very dark. Not a creature was stirring, not even my Logitech VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse, when I crept to the bathroom to try out my new toothbrush. I had read all the instructions twice, and having waited the minimum two hour charging period, I was ready.

Fearlessly, I pushed the shiny button until a green light appeared beside the Max Care routine. None of that sissy "sensitive" or "one minute" stuff for me - I wanted it all!! With a steady hand, I wet the bristles and applied some toothpaste, then confidently pressed the green button......

..... and nearly jumped out of my skin.

It was noisier than I thought it would have been, or maybe it was all in my head, as no-one else seemed to have heard the sonic whine, even in the wee hours of the morning. Starting with the bottom teeth, I gently moved the brush head in the back and forth motion as directed. It tingled with a sensation that was strange and a little uncomfortable. After 45 seconds of "clean" and "massage", the Quadpacer signal indicated it was time for a change of location, as it did faithfully three more times.

Observations:

1. The tingling will take some getting used to. According to the booklet, the power will increase after this for 13 more brushings, by which time I will have grown to love the sensation.
2. Toothpaste is flying everywhere. I try closing my mouth, but then I can't brush the front teeth properly. It's running down my chin too.
3. The standard brush head feels big in my mouth, I think I'll try the compact head next time.
4. My teeth really feel clean afterwards. They actually feel "dentist clean". Maybe this gadget works after all.
5. I'll let the charging process continue and play with it some more tomorrow.

Second use:

The brush is now fully charged.

I switched over to the compact head, set it to "Clean" mode and turned it on. It didn't seem so loud any more, and the tingling wasn't that bad. I was able to maneuver the compact head a lot better, and not so much toothpaste escaped. When using the brushing modes, the toothbrush turns itself off at the end of the brushing cycle. I had just begun to enjoy myself, so I started it again, this time switching to Sensitive mode and Massage mode. Way cool.

Conclusions:

Pros -
1. This toothbrush gives you "dentist clean" with every brushing
2. There are five options for personalized brushing - 3 modes and 2 routines
3. It breaks you in gently to the new sensation
4. You have a choice of two brushing heads with caps
5. It's easy to set up and easy to use
6. There's a gauge to tell you when it needs recharging
7. It comes with a small charger for when you're traveling, and a case for the toothbrush
8. It has a UV sanitizer to zap any germs that dare to live on your brushing head, and may possibly be used to clean some models of the Oral B brushing heads you may be using in other toothbrushes. NOTE: The manual says you should only clean Sonicare ProResults brush heads in the sanitizer, but the Sonicare website lists four types of brushes that can be cleaned. I don't know which is correct.
9. The base of the sanitizer/charger has a groove where you can tuck away some of the power cord so it doesn't dangle in loops from the point.
10. It looks professional

Cons -
1. It takes some getting used to, particularly if you have sensitive teeth
2. This is basically a one person model, especially if you want to use both brushing heads yourself, but it comes with color code rings, so that if two people are sharing, you can code the brushing heads and store them in the UV sanitizer.
3. The standard brush is a bit big for smaller mouths
4. Replacements for the compact brush aren't yet available for sale, and heads need to be changed every 3 months.
5. The toothbrush doesn't fit firmly into the charger base, and I had to check to make sure I put it on correctly. The toothbrush doesn't balance well standing up with the brush head and cap attached.
6. It's a bit pricey, but worth it in the long run when you consider the cost of regular professional cleaning

Overall, I'm very happy with this toothbrush, and look forward to using it for a long time to come.
